Bouldering is a form of climbing that emphasises short, challenging routes known as "problems." Climbers navigate these problems using a combination of physical strength, balance, flexibility, and mental sharpness. The problem-solving aspect comes into play as climbers analyse the route, identify the best holds and footholds, and plan their movements strategically. Each problem presents a unique puzzle that requires creativity and adaptability to overcome. Bouldering's focus on problem-solving adds a more interesting thinking aspect, making it a mentally stimulating and rewarding pursuit.
Nope! Bouldering isn’t just about strength; you need skill and technique which you will learn and develop as you progress through the grades and your strength will also develop with more experience.
Bouldering is one of the best sports you can do as it is a form of resistance training so you will soon see how bouldering can be used to tone up as well as improve your strength, flexibility and mobility which is why it makes a fantastic sport for all ages.
Climbing is a sport for all and there are climbs for every age and ability of climber. Many people who take up climbing, participate for a life time due to it not only being great for physical fitness but also mental and social fitness too.
Climbing shoes offer a better experience to allow you to stand on small footholds that would be otherwise challenging in any other footwear.

Route setting is the process of creating/making the climbs on the wall. The route setter is the most important job in a climbing wall and is responsible for making the climbs interesting and appropriate for a variety of climbers from beginners through to professionals. Onyx Climbing is lucky to have Ian Vickers, one of the most prestigious route setters in the UK.
If you want to be a better climber, having your own shoes that will mould to the shape of your foot will be a huge advantage. There are LOTS of different styles to choose from depending on your ability, foot shape, price margin etc so please ask a member of staff for advice on what type of shoe would be best for you.
Bouldering could be a suitable activity for you if you're scared of heights. Bouldering routes are lower to the ground, and safety measures like crash mats provide protection from falls. Bouldering walls offer a controlled environment, and the climbing community can offer support. As you gain confidence, your fear of heights might diminish.
